These are the golf clubs of 2020, ranked by our critic's grade, ten of the eleven reviews the year holds. Drivers dominate: six of the ten, taking the year's one S, two of the six A grades and all three C grades. The theme is the face: Callaway Mavrik had a machine design its face for every model, and Titleist TSi2 and Titleist TSi3 thinned theirs with an aerospace titanium alloy.
TaylorMade SIM leads with the year's one S. The Inertia Generator made aerodynamics and a deep centre of gravity the same decision, and by our critic's account the whole industry followed. Cobra King SpeedZone, graded A, has four zones that describe real parts rather than slogans, at fifty dollars less than everything it beat. Mizuno JPX 921 Forged, graded A, is forged from chromoly so a thin fast face keeps the Mizuno feel. Titleist Vokey SM8, graded A, moved the centre of gravity forward and fixed the wedge's worst habit.
The C grades all go to drivers: Titleist TSi2, Ping G425 Max with 26 grams of movable tungsten, and Titleist TSi3 with a five-position weight track. None of the three verdicts finds a fault, so a C here means nothing wrong and nothing that set the club apart. Between Titleist TSi2 and Titleist TSi3, both $549, a reader should weigh the larger, more stable head against the compact one with lower spin and flatter flight.
