Vokey moved the centre of gravity forward and quietly fixed the wedge's worst habit.

Wedges tend to fly too high and too inconsistently on full shots because the centre of gravity sits behind the face, so the club adds loft through impact. SM8 attacks that directly by putting a tungsten weight high in the toe and pulling the centre of gravity forward and up until it sits closer to where the ball actually strikes. The effect on a monitor is a flatter, more repeatable peak height and a distance spread that tightens by several yards on a full sand wedge.
Around the green nothing changed, which is fine, because the grind range was already the best in golf. Six sole options, twenty three loft and bounce combinations, and a fitting culture that means most decent shops can put the right one in your hands. Feel is firm and precise rather than soft. The finishes wear quickly, particularly the jet black, and the grooves lose their bite after a season of range work. At $159 a head it was the default choice and deserved to be.
