These are the golf clubs of 2022, ranked by our critic's grade, the top ten of the seventeen reviews the year holds. Four of the ten are wedges, and a wedge tops the list. The grades spread evenly: two S, four A, four B, and the only driver on the page sits in the B tier.
Titleist Vokey SM9 leads, graded S, the most complete wedge line in golf by our critic's verdict and the one everybody else is answering. Ping i230, the other S, is a players cavity that took four years to sound right, called the best iron of its type in a decade. Cobra King Forged Tec opens the A tier, a forged hollow body at $1,199 that undercuts the big brands by two hundred dollars. Cobra Snakebite and Callaway Jaws Raw, both graded A, are the two aggressive groove wedges.
A B here marks a club built for a narrow player or priced steeply, not a weak one. Ping Glide 4.0 has the most forgiving wedge face, Ping PLD Milled Anser 2 is priced like jewellery at $485, Titleist TSR4 is aimed at high spin players, and Mizuno Pro 221 is a true blade for the few who deserve one. Between Titleist Vokey SM9 and Ping Glide 4.0, a reader should weigh six grinds at $179 against softer steel and forgiveness at $217.50.
