Wilson Staff Model X Review

When Wilson split its tour ball in two for 2024, the familiar name went on the softer model and the X inherited the character of the original Staff Model: firm, fast and hungry for spin. Wilson aimed it squarely at players who prefer a Pro V1x or a TP5x, and claimed it as the fastest urethane ball on the market, with higher launch and more iron and wedge spin than its sibling.

Independent testing largely backs the pitch. In a 62 ball robot test it was the only model to collect an award in every category, taking gold in its class for tee to green performance at moderate and slower swing speeds and silver at the fastest. It was never the single longest ball at any speed, but it never fell far from the top, and it landed iron shots at the steepest angle of any ball tested while spinning among the highest into greens and on pitches.

Not every tester found the same speed. One judged it a touch slower off the driver than the premium competition while praising the spin and the solid feel, and the firmness is real: this is a ball for players who like to feel the strike, and it reports firmly off the putter. The cover also proved more durable than earlier Wilson urethane.

It launched at fifty five dollars a dozen, level with the flagships it set out to beat, so the value case rests on performance rather than a discount. Wilson replaced it in January 2026 with a new Staff Model X at fifty dollars. For a fast swinging player who wants spin and feedback it is as complete a tour ball as anything on the shelf; slower swings and soft feel seekers belong with the standard Staff Model.
