Supabase's whole proposition is that the database underneath should be Postgres, and everything follows from that choice. Data lives in a real relational database you can query with SQL, back up, migrate away from and reason about, while the platform wraps it in the conveniences that made Firebase popular: authentication with every provider, file storage, realtime subscriptions and a generated API.

The dashboard is excellent and the local development story is genuinely good. The free tier is enough to build and launch something. The rough edges are those of a young company moving fast: row level security is powerful and easy to get wrong, the edge functions are less mature than the database, and pricing jumps from free to a real monthly bill once a project has any traffic. The open source core means the escape hatch is real, which is the reason to choose it over the alternatives that do not offer one.
