Shopify is a hosted commerce platform: storefront, catalogue, checkout, payments, taxes, shipping labels and analytics arrive as one subscription, with hosting, PCI compliance and uptime handled by the vendor. Themes are authored in Liquid and, more recently, rearranged through a section-based visual editor, so merchants can restructure pages without touching code.
Shopify Payments removes the third-party gateway surcharge, Shop Pay accelerates repeat checkout, and the app store supplies subscriptions, reviews, loyalty and ERP connectors for the gaps. Point of sale ties physical retail to the same inventory, Markets handles multi-currency and cross-border selling, and headless builds run on the Storefront API and Hydrogen.
Plans start at $39 per month for Basic and climb through Grow and Advanced to Plus, with online card processing rates falling as the tier rises and third-party gateway fees applied on top. The company was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Ottawa. This entry carries a provisional placeholder grade: it has not been through a full graded review yet, so every letter here sits at a neutral C until it is.
