Perplexity is an AI answer engine that responds to questions with a written answer and cited sources instead of a list of links. Max, launched in July 2025, is its top individual tier at 200 dollars a month or 2000 dollars a year, aimed at people who treat AI search as core work infrastructure.
The money buys volume and priority rather than a different product. Max includes unlimited use of Labs, the tool that turns a prompt into a report, spreadsheet or small dashboard, plus a Model Council feature that runs several frontier models in parallel so you can compare answers. Subscribers get early access to new launches, including the Comet browser before it went free, and priority routing to the newest models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
The catch is the price gap. Perplexity Pro at 20 dollars a month already gives most people more search than they use, so Max only pays off if you generate reports all day or need the multi model comparison and the highest limits. For a researcher, analyst or founder who lives inside the tool, it is defensible. For everyone else it is ten times the Pro price for headroom you may never touch.
