The problem is real and it arrived faster than anyone's governance did. By the middle of this year an ordinary mid sized company could be running agents built in Copilot Studio, agents written by its own developers, agents bolted on by a vendor and agents nobody has told IT about, all holding credentials and all acting on company data. Agent 365, announced at Ignite in November and generally available on May 1, is Microsoft's answer.

Every agent gets an Entra Agent ID. The registry lists what exists across Microsoft and non Microsoft platforms. Access control treats an agent as a principal with permissions rather than as a feature of somebody's app. Dashboards give the security team telemetry on a fleet it previously could not see. Copilot Studio wires itself in automatically, which makes the Microsoft path almost effortless.

The friction is everywhere else. Bringing in an open source framework or a third party agent means doing the identity and registration work yourself, and the posture you get out is only as good as the inventory you put in, which is where the setup grade comes from. The licensing is the odder part. Agent 365 sells per user at fifteen dollars a month, not per agent, so one licence covers every agent that person owns, sponsors or interacts with.

That is generous for a small team running twenty agents and absurd for a five thousand seat company piloting three. It is also included in Microsoft 365 E7 at ninety nine dollars a seat, which is the real sales motion and most of the reason the standalone price exists.

Buy it when you actually have a fleet. Before that you are paying for a dashboard of an empty room. It is $15 per user a month standalone, or bundled into Microsoft 365 E7 at $99 per user.
