ElevenLabs makes the text to speech voices that a large share of the AI industry quietly runs on, and Eleven v3 is the model that reached general availability in February 2026. It reads text in more than 70 languages, handles multi speaker dialogue, and takes inline audio tags that let you direct tone and delivery, which closes much of the remaining gap between synthetic and recorded narration.
Pricing is a credit ladder. A free tier lets you sample it, then Starter at 6 dollars a month, Creator at 22, Pro at 99, Scale at 299 and Business at 990 add monthly credit allowances, while the API runs about 0.10 dollars per 1000 characters for the top model. Text to speech burns roughly one credit per character, so budgeting is straightforward until volume climbs.
The strength is simply quality and range. For audiobooks, dubbing, video voiceover and the voice layer inside other apps and agents, ElevenLabs is the reference point competitors are measured against. Two things temper it. Costs mount quickly once you are producing at scale rather than experimenting, and realistic voice cloning carries obvious misuse risk, which is why consent and detection tools sit around the product. For anyone who needs natural speech in software it is the safe default. For a hobby project the free and Starter tiers are plenty.
