Duolingo Review
Unbeaten at getting people to practise every day, still unable to carry most of them to a conversation.

The achievement here is behavioural rather than pedagogical. Streaks, leagues, hearts and a cartoon owl that guilt trips by push notification have persuaded 58.7 million people to open a language app on an ordinary Tuesday, a number no classroom method has approached. For absolute beginners building vocabulary and a daily habit it works. For anyone chasing conversational fluency it stalls somewhere in the intermediate trees, and the courses outside the big five thin out fast.
2026 was a strange year for the company. The stock fell roughly eighty per cent from its all time high while revenue kept growing, the chief executive walked back the memo that had told staff they would be evaluated on their use of AI, and management deliberately gave up more than fifty million dollars of bookings by stripping out conversion prompts and opening premium features up, betting that daily users now become revenue later. Paid subscribers still rose to 12.7 million.
Pricing is fair at the bottom and ambitious at the top. Super runs about thirteen dollars a month or roughly eighty four a year, the family plan at a hundred and twenty for six people is the genuine bargain, and Max at thirty dollars buys video call and roleplay practice that many people try once.
