Bolt.new launched in October 2024 on a single post and reached forty million dollars of annualised revenue in about five months, one of the fastest ramps software has recorded. The trick underneath is StackBlitz's WebContainer technology: a full Node environment running inside the browser tab, so the model writes code, installs packages and starts a dev server with no server anywhere. Type a description, watch a working site appear, click to deploy it.

For front end work with a modest backend it is remarkable, and the preview loop beats anything running locally. Push further and the seams show. Long sessions drift, the model reintroduces bugs it fixed an hour earlier, and every one of those attempts costs tokens. Anything that needs a real database, authentication or environment variables means wiring up Supabase or Netlify by hand, at which point the magic becomes ordinary configuration work.

That meter is the real complaint. Free gives 300,000 tokens a day and one million a month, which is a demonstration rather than a plan. Pro starts at twenty five dollars for ten million tokens and climbs from there, and the entry rung is the worst value per token on the ladder. Teams is thirty dollars a member. Budget two or three times the first estimate, because failed attempts bill like good ones.
