Grooves do most of their work on full shots. The trouble has always been the little ones, the fifty yard pitch where the ball barely engages the scorelines and the spin number collapses, and that is what the etched pattern between the grooves is for. It adds texture in the flat land the ball rides across on a partial swing, and the difference shows up on a monitor rather than in the marketing: the short ones check a half turn earlier and roll out less.
The face is still raw and still rusts, the sole is still machine milled, and the grind count is now seven, which finally gives the high lofts proper heel and toe relief for players who like to open the face. Feel is firm, a shade louder than the milled wedges from Vokey, though the sole through turf is superb. It arrived in September 2023 at $180 a head. Nothing revolutionary, but a genuine improvement in the shots that actually cost strokes.
