2012PingGolf Club
Variable depth grooves that send a heel strike the same distance as a pure one, in the shape everyone already trusts.

Ping's answer to the mishit putt was to change the face rather than the head. The True Roll grooves are milled deeper and wider through the middle of the face and shallower toward the heel and the toe, so a putt caught out on the toe leaves the head at close to the speed of a pure one. On a twenty footer that is the difference between two feet short and a tap in, and it is the single most useful thing a putter maker did that year.
You feel it as much as you see it. The milled face is firmer and more talkative than an insert, with a click that tells you exactly where you struck it. Anser 2 is the shape Ping has been selling since 1966 and it still frames a ball better than anything drawn since, one sight line, a plumber's neck and a shade of toe hang for a mild arc. The satin finish kills glare properly. There is no exotic material story here and no insert to wear out. For a hundred and eighty dollars it does the one thing a putter must do, which is roll the ball the distance you asked for.
