Callaway finally softens the feel without giving up the spin it has always chased.

Opus is the first Callaway wedge in years that a player might choose for reasons other than spin. The face texture between the grooves does the work on partial shots, where the ball skids across the land rather than engaging the scorelines, and the numbers on half wedges are noticeably steadier than the previous generation. What has changed more is everything around the face. The cavity is deeper, the transition into the hosel cleaner, the topline thinner, and impact comes back softer and quieter, closer to the milled wedges from Japan than to the clicky Callaways of the past.
Five grinds is a sensible spread rather than a comprehensive one, and the low bounce options are properly low, which suits firm turf and punishes anyone who arrives steep. Finishes hold up better than the raw faces did. At $179.99 it is priced exactly where the category sits, and for the first time in a while a Callaway wedge belongs in the conversation on feel as well as spin.
