The first global shutter in a full-frame camera, and the first honest bill for what a global shutter costs.

Every full-frame camera before this one read its sensor a row at a time, which is why propellers bend and golf shafts lean. The a9 III reads every pixel at the same instant, and the list of things that stop being true is long: no skew at any speed, no banding under any light, flash sync at any shutter speed up to one eighty-thousandth of a second, and a hundred and twenty raw frames a second with autofocus tracking through all of them. Pre-capture reaches a full second back.
For a photographer whose subjects move faster than the frame, this is not an improvement but a different category. The bill arrives in the shadows. Stacking that much circuitry behind each pixel costs well capacity, so base sensitivity starts at ISO 250 and dynamic range sits roughly a stop behind a conventional stacked sensor of the same generation, which you will see in bright, contrasty landscape work. Six thousand dollars for twenty-four megapixels also asks a hard question of anyone not photographing motion for a living. Buy it for what it uniquely does, not as a general-purpose body.
