Fujifilm X-M5 Review

2024FujifilmCamera

Fujifilm's smallest, cheapest X body is a superb little video camera, as long as you can live without a viewfinder

The X-M5 is the lightest camera in Fujifilm's X series, and it packs a surprising amount into a body that weighs well under 400 grams. It uses the proven 26.1 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, adds a dedicated dial for Fujifilm's much loved film simulations, and records 6.2K open gate and 4K in 10-bit with the F-Log2 profile. A fully articulating screen, a vertical video mode, a three capsule microphone and a mechanical shutter round out a spec sheet that looks far above its price.

Most reviewers love what it does for the money. Stills carry Fujifilm's signature color, video quality is outstanding for the class, heat management is good, and it is small and stylish enough to go everywhere. As a first proper camera for someone stepping up from a phone, or a compact second body for a hybrid shooter, it is hard to beat.

The compromises are real, though. There is no viewfinder and no in body stabilization, the small grip gets awkward with bigger lenses, the rear screen struggles in bright sun, and subject tracking can lose its way, especially in video, which is why some critics stop short of their highest praise. Photographers who like to shoot at eye level should look at one of Fujifilm's viewfinder models such as the X-T50 instead.
