The a7S III is judged as what it is, which is a video camera that takes photographs on the side. The twelve megapixel sensor is the whole design: enormous individual pixels that stay clean at sensitivities where anything else falls apart, mapped onto a 4K frame with no line skipping and no crop. It records ten bit color internally at up to 120 frames, it keeps doing so for as long as the card lasts because Sony finally solved the overheating that embarrassed the previous generation, and the fully articulating screen and rewritten touch menu turned the worst interface in the industry into a usable one.

Autofocus in video is the reason many people bought it and stayed. The objections are about what you pay and what you get back. Twelve megapixels is a real limit for anyone who crops or prints, the stills side is outclassed by cheaper cameras, and reviewers were right that the low light advantage alone does not justify the money for a photographer. For a film maker it is still a bargain.
