Flagship autofocus for fourteen hundred dollars, in a body that still refuses to grow a decent viewfinder.

Sony's APS-C line went years without a serious update and then leapfrogged, because the a6700 carries the same dedicated AI processing unit as the full-frame flagships. Human pose estimation on a fourteen-hundred-dollar camera means it recognises a body rather than a face and keeps tracking through a turn, and the subject list runs from birds to cars to insects. Twenty-six megapixels from a backside-illuminated sensor is a real improvement on the ageing chip it replaces, 4K60 is oversampled from 6K with no crop, and 4K120 is there if you accept a modest one.

The vari-angle screen and the dial that switches between stills, video and slow motion show that Sony finally understood who buys these. The body is where the money was saved and it shows every time you raise it. The viewfinder is the same small, low-resolution panel Sony has fitted to this line for eight years and it is now the worst thing about the camera. There is one card slot and no joystick, so choosing a focus point is a touchscreen affair. A superb sensor and processor wearing a body from the previous decade.
