Sony a1 II Review
2024SonyCamera
The most complete camera anyone makes, and the hardest one to justify against a Z8 and the money left over.

There is nothing the a1 II cannot do. Fifty megapixels, thirty frames a second, 8K video, flash sync to 1/400, and the dedicated AI processing unit borrowed from the a9 III, which is what makes the difference in practice: human pose estimation that holds a runner through a turned head, and subject recognition that switches between bird, insect and aircraft without being told twice. The grip is deeper, the shutter quieter, the screen finally tilts and articulates on one four-axis hinge instead of forcing a choice, and stabilisation reaches eight and a half stops.
The problem is arithmetic. The sensor and the burst rate are unchanged from a 2021 camera, the price is unchanged too, and a Nikon body that does ninety per cent of this costs two and a half thousand dollars less, which is a lens and a half. For a working sports or wildlife photographer who needs one body for stadium light and studio detail, the case still closes. For everyone else it is a demonstration that being best at everything and being worth the money are separate questions.
