Nikon Z8 Review

2023NikonCamera

Nikon put the entire Z9 into a body a third smaller and $1,500 cheaper, and forgot to remove anything.

Nikon's trick with the Z8 was subtraction that took nothing away. Strip the integrated vertical grip and the enormous battery off a Z9 and what remains is the same 45.7-megapixel stacked sensor, the same Expeed 7 processor, the same firmware and the same absent mechanical shutter, for fifteen hundred dollars less. The stacked readout is quick enough, around three and a half milliseconds, that rolling shutter stops being something you plan around, and the electronic-only design means no shutter to wear out and no blackout.

Twenty frames a second in raw, a hundred and twenty at reduced resolution, and pre-release capture that backfills the moment before you finished reacting. Video is the part people underrate: 8K60 and 12-bit raw recorded internally, with no separate cine model required. The costs are real. The EN-EL15c battery is the weak link and you will carry three of them.

Fully electronic capture still bands under some cheap artificial lighting. Sustained 8K warms the body enough to matter on a long take. None of it changes the verdict, which is that Nikon shipped a flagship at a middleweight price and every competitor had to answer it.
