A sensor architecture nobody had shipped before, trading a stop of shadow latitude for flagship speed at half the money.

The partially stacked sensor is the whole story, and it is a genuine engineering choice rather than a marketing one. Nikon put the fast readout circuitry along the top and bottom edges of the sensor instead of behind every pixel, which costs far less than a fully stacked design and recovers most of the speed: readout roughly three times quicker than the Z6 II, twenty frames a second in raw, pre-release capture, and rolling shutter mild enough to shoot electronic by default.

It funds a video specification with no business at this price, including 6K60 N-RAW recorded internally, 5.9K ProRes RAW, 4K120, and full-width capture with no crop. The viewfinder is the brightest anyone has shipped at four thousand nits, and in direct sun that is not a number but a working difference. The compromise showed up in testing and Nikon did not hide it well: dynamic range at base sensitivity sits about a stop behind conventional twenty-four megapixel sensors, which matters if you lift shadows on high-contrast landscapes and matters not at all if you shoot events, sport or video. Know which of those you are before you buy.
