The number that matters is not the megapixel count, it is the sensor area, which is about seventy per cent larger than full frame. That is what produces the tonal roll-off and the gradual transition into out-of-focus areas that people describe as the medium format look and then struggle to quantify. A hundred and two megapixels of it, with eight stops of in-body stabilisation, in a body lighter than several full-frame flagships and priced at five thousand dollars, which is genuinely less than the camera it descends from and less than some thirty-five millimetre flagships cost.

Autofocus finally has subject detection and finally works well enough for portrait sessions and unhurried documentary work. What it cannot do is move. Seven frames a second, a slow sensor readout that makes the electronic shutter unusable for anything travelling, video that stops at 4K30 and looks fine but is not why anyone is here, and lenses that are large, expensive and not especially fast. Buy it for landscape, architecture, studio and fashion, where the files are extraordinary and the pace is yours to set.
