The R50 does the thing an entry level camera most needs to do, which is take the picture the beginner meant to take. Canon's subject detection identifies faces, eyes and animals and stays locked on to them, and in a body this cheap that is a genuine advance on everything that came before. The 24 megapixel sensor is the one from the R10 and produces pleasing color with very little work, full width 4K is oversampled and looks good, and the whole thing weighs almost nothing.

The limits arrive quickly. There is no stabilization in the body, the controls are cramped and short of dials, the electronic viewfinder is small, rolling shutter in video is obvious on a pan, and the kit zoom is slow. The real problem is not the camera. Canon's crop sensor lens range is still thin, and the years the company spent blocking other manufacturers from making autofocus lenses for the mount left owners buying adapters for old glass. Excellent value, thin future.
