Canon EOS R5 Mark II Review

Eye Control autofocus stops being a party trick the moment you shoot two people in the same frame.

The stacked sensor is the headline and Eye Control is the reason to care. Canon's viewfinder tracks where your pupil is pointed and drops the autofocus point there, which sounds like a gimmick until you photograph two players in one frame and choose between them by looking, faster than any joystick allows. The subject recognition underneath has grown a sense of the game: it will follow a ball through a volleyball rally and shift priority to the player about to touch it, rather than locking onto the nearest face and staying there.
Thirty frames a second, pre-capture that reaches half a second into the past, and a readout fast enough that electronic shutter becomes the default rather than the compromise. The in-camera neural upscaling and noise reduction are genuinely useful rather than marketing. Heat is the honest asterisk. Canon improved the sustained recording story over the original R5, but 8K60 still asks for the accessory cooling grip if you shoot long takes in a warm room, and that grip is not cheap. Buy it for stills and the video is a bonus; buy it for 8K video and budget for the fan.
