A beginner's camera with a professional's autofocus, and a lens problem it did not create.

The R10 makes one argument and makes it well: autofocus that finds people, animals and vehicles and holds them, in a camera cheaper than most phones. That is a real thing, and for a parent photographing children or someone shooting a first wedding, it matters more than anything else on the specification sheet. Image quality from the 24 megapixel sensor is good without a stabiliser to help it, the burst rate is generous, and the body is light enough to carry all day.

Video is decent, with oversampled 4K at 30 and a cropped 60. The problems are around it rather than in it. There is no in body stabilisation, the viewfinder is small and the kit lenses are slow and plastic, and because Canon spent years refusing to license the mount to third parties, an R10 owner who wants a fast prime is buying an adapter and an old DSLR lens. It is an excellent camera in a thin system.
