Ye Review
2018Album
Twenty four minutes cut in Wyoming against a deadline, rough at the edges and more honest than anything around it.

Seven tracks, twenty four minutes, reportedly rewritten in the days before the listening party, and the rush is audible. It is also the point. The opener is a spoken passage about intrusive thoughts that is genuinely unsettling, and it sets the terms: no concept, no armour, just what was on his mind that month. Ghost Town is the reason the record lasts, lifting into something enormous when a guest singer takes it over the top. Yikes turns a good loop into one of the barest things he has said about his own mind.
All Mine is a punchline record that lands about half of its punchlines. Violent Crimes tries to be a father's reckoning and ends up more uncomfortable than moving, which is the most honest failure on the album. The mixing is flat in places and the arrangements are single ideas repeated, but the ideas are good ones, and at this length none of them wears out. The writing still mistakes bluntness for candour often enough to hold that axis a tier down. He was in the middle of a public collapse and the album is honest about that, and the honesty is worth more than the running time suggests.
