When I Get Home Review
2019Album
A jazz fusion mood piece about Houston, gorgeous to sit inside and almost impossible to hold onto.

This is the opposite of a statement record, and the refusal is the point. Nineteen tracks, several under two minutes, built on looped fragments, chopped and screwed textures borrowed from the city she grew up in, and jazz harmony played by musicians including Panda Bear, Standing on the Corner and Tyler, the Creator. Almeda is the closest thing to a single and it repeats one list of things until it becomes an incantation.
Stay Flo has real groove. Binz is loose and funny. Down with the Clique drifts beautifully. The writing is the weak axis by design: phrases recur without developing, and where A Seat at the Table gave you sentences you could quote, this gives you texture. That works when you let the record play and fails when you go looking for songs. As an evocation of a specific place and a specific kind of memory it is superb. As something you return to deliberately it is much rarer than its predecessor.
