Vultures 1 Review
2024Album
A slick, empty record built on provocation, with a co-star doing most of the singing and none of the damage.

Ty Dolla Sign is the reason this is listenable at all. His melodies carry long stretches where the nominal star has nothing prepared, and the production, sleek and low and heavily indebted to the club records of the moment, moves well enough on its own. Carnival is an actual event, a terrace chant over a stomping loop, and it deserved the ubiquity it got. Talking is a sweet thing built around his daughter.
Burn and Back to Me have functional ideas. The rest is a man with a microphone and no material, filling bars with deliberately ugly provocation because provocation still gets a reaction and craft takes longer. Sample clearances went unfixed and versions kept changing after release, which by now is a habit rather than an accident. As pop production it is competent. As a rap album from the person who wrote All Falls Down it is embarrassing, and the shock is doing all the work the writing will not.
