The Massacre Review

2005Album

More of everything, hooks included, at a length that dilutes the venom. Still holds three or four monsters.

He was the biggest rapper alive and the album is built like someone who knew it, twenty two tracks with no fat trimmed and no risk taken. What saves it is that the hooks are still landing. Candy Shop is silly and irresistible, Just a Lil Bit rides one of the most patient beats of the decade, and Hate It or Love It, technically a G Unit song, remains the warmest thing his voice ever sat on.

Disco Inferno and Outta Control keep the club end covered. The trouble is that the debut earned its arrogance with a story and this one just asserts it, so by the fourteenth track about being shot and being rich the returns are gone. The production is competent and anonymous where the first record was sharp. It sold in absurd quantities and did the job it was built for, which is a fair description of the whole thing.
