The Chronic Review
1992Album
The record that rebuilt what rap sounds like, and one of the very few that is still simply a pleasure to play.

Almost every choice here became a rule afterwards. The decision to replay funk with session musicians instead of sampling it outright gives the whole thing a lift that hardware alone could not produce, so the bass moves, the keyboards bend, and the drums sit back far enough that the voices have somewhere to live. Nuthin but a G Thang is the definitive statement of that sound and it has never once sounded dated.
Let Me Ride and Fuck wit Dre Day are the same trick at different tempos. The other achievement is casting. He hands enormous amounts of the record to a nineteen year old with a drawl who steals it completely, and the discovery of Snoop is as much a part of this album's importance as any beat. The content is casually vicious about women and settles scores at length, and that is a real cost. As a listening experience it remains unreasonably good.
