Spaceships on the Blade Review

2022Album

His most ambitious independent record, and the length is the only thing wrong with it.

This is the record where the small business philosophy becomes an actual worldview rather than a running joke. He writes about ownership, patience and the cost of doing things slowly with enough specificity that it stops being a bit, and the production keeps pace, live bass and horns and warm keys arranged with real care. Smoothies in Miami is the centrepiece.

Private Valet has the best groove. Another Level and 2 P's in a Pod are strong. The flaw is scale, because at this length one tempo and one vocal register becomes a genuine test of patience, and the last third adds nothing the first two thirds did not already establish. Trimmed to fourteen tracks this would be excellent. As released it is a very good album you will listen to in halves, which is a fair trade for the amount of quality in it.
