Shadow of a Doubt Review
2015Album
The commercial one, and it is both more flexible and more uneven than the album that made his name.

After the album that changed his standing, the smart move was to prove he was not a novelty who needed one particular producer. This does exactly that. There is trap here, there is soul, there is a stretch of plush late night material, and he sounds at home on all of it. Fuckin Up the Count is a genuine peak, slow and menacing and built on a warped vocal sample. Careless and Extradite show a melodic side that had not surfaced before.
Insecurities is a real attempt to write about paranoia rather than perform it. What is missing is cohesion. Sixteen tracks pulling in five directions with nobody setting a single mood means it plays as a strong collection rather than an album, and a few of the more radio facing songs are simply below his standard. It confirmed that the rapping was not a fluke, and it did not build anything of its own to stand on.
