Sail Out Review
2013Album
Seven songs in half an hour, and the most precise statement of what Jhené Aiko does better than anyone.

Sail Out is short enough to take in one sitting and it rewards the attention. No I.D. and Fisticuffs build it out of space: muted keys, drums that barely touch the floor, and room for Aiko's voice to stay close and quiet. The Worst is the centrepiece, a love song built on admitting she does not need the person she keeps going back to, and it is the song that made her.
The guests are well chosen and well used. Kendrick Lamar on Stay Ready (What a Life) and Childish Gambino on Bed Peace, whose video restaged John Lennon and Yoko Ono's bed-in, bring energy without taking the record over, and Vince Staples and Ab-Soul fit the mood rather than breaking it. 3:16AM, released more than a year before the EP, is the late-night confessional she had been circling since Sailing Soul(s).
Nothing is wasted in thirty minutes, and the restraint is the argument: R&B that trusts a whisper to carry the weight. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, and it is still the purest distillation of her sound.
