Rodeo Review
2015Album
Reviewers filed it as style with nothing underneath. Eleven years on, half of rap's sound is built from it, and the sound was always the point.

The contemporary reviews are worth reading now, because they get the record right and the future wrong. Critics heard a spectacular production job wrapped around a rapper with no interior life, and they were right about both halves; what they could not see was that the first half would matter far more. Rodeo builds a specific place, a smeared and overlit night with the low end pushed past comfort, and the way it stacks vocal effects, switches beats mid-song and lets instrumental outros run becomes standard equipment for everyone who follows.
Oh My Dis Side and 90210 both split in two partway through, and both halves beat most singles released that year. Antidote, an afterthought, peaked at number sixteen and became the biggest song on the album. Maria I'm Drunk, with Justin Bieber and Young Thug, is a slow ugly mess in the best possible way, and the cast around him, Quavo, Future, the Weeknd, Kanye West, is used as texture rather than billing.
The writing is still the weak part: drugs, women and money in the flat, declarative style of a man reading a mood board aloud, and the T.I. narration promises an arc the songs never deliver. On a record this built around sound, that costs it less every year. It debuted at number three, went double platinum in 2024, and it is the album a generation learned atmosphere from.
