Pink Tape Review

2023Album

An hour and a half of rap, metal, hyperpop and noise, and the ambition is the only consistent thing.

The scale is the point and the scale is the problem. Twenty six tracks that lurch between hard trap, nu metal, hyperpop and a System of a Down cover, sequenced without any regard for flow, so the record never establishes a mood long enough to break one. Some of it is thrilling. Just Wanna Rock is a genuinely great two minute idea built on almost nothing, and it became the biggest song of the year on that strength alone.

Suicide Doors has a real melody. Amped works. But the guitar tracks are pastiche rather than reinvention, and the middle third repeats the album's own textures at lower quality. There is a superb forty minute record in here and the version that came out is exhausting. Credit for refusing to repeat Eternal Atake. Deduction for mistaking variety for structure, which is the mistake this whole run of albums keeps making.
