My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Review
2010Album
Maximalism as a moral argument: every excess on the record is also its subject, and it never once buckles.

The famous part is the process: a compound in Hawaii, a rotating roster of writers and producers, songs rebuilt for months. The remarkable part is that the excess is the argument. This is a record about a man who has become insufferable, made by a man being insufferable, and it never lets him off. Runaway is a piano figure, a toast to the worst version of himself, and three minutes of distorted vocal at the end that says more than the verse did.
Power puts a prog rock chant under a man announcing he has nothing left to lose. Blame Game and Lost in the World are the two ends of it, humiliation and something like grace. The maximalism could have collapsed into noise and instead every layer is load bearing, from the horns and the choir to the guest verses that outdo the host on purpose. Fifteen years on it still sounds like it cost something. Nothing else in rap has this scale and this much control at once.
