Long. Live. ASAP Review
2013Album
A major-label debut that spent its budget wisely, with a great posse cut and a top ten hit to show for it.

The money shows, mostly in the right places. Hit-Boy's Goldie keeps the drawl and the swagger of the mixtape, the haze survives the move to a major label, and Rocky, producing as Lord Flacko, holds the sound together. F**kin' Problems, with Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar, gave him his first top ten hit on the Hot 100, and 1 Train, a posse cut with Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson and Big K.R.I.T., is one of the best of its decade.
The reaches are where it wobbles. Wild for the Night with Skrillex is an EDM crossover that dates the record, and Rocky's lyrics, still circling money, clothes and women, are more stylish than substantial.
It opened at number one on the Billboard 200 and it has aged better than most major-label rap debuts of its moment. It does not surpass the mixtape, but it is where that sound proved it could scale.
