Live. Love. ASAP Review
2011Album
The free mixtape that made Harlem sound like Houston and turned cloud rap into a career.

Rocky's first tape sounds like a New Yorker who spent his teens listening to Houston and Memphis, which is roughly what it is. The beats are woozy and slow, full of chopped and screwed hooks, and Clams Casino's contributions, Palace and Wassup among them, sound like nothing else from that year: vast, blurred, almost ambient rap production.
He is not yet a great rapper and he does not need to be, which is why the lyrics grade sits so far under the rest. The flow is relaxed and the charisma does the work, and the subject matter stays close to money, drugs and women. Peso and Purple Swag had already made him famous before the tape arrived, and both still hold up.
It is a mixtape, long in the middle and uneven as a set, but it defined a sound other people spent years chasing and it launched a career. For a free download, few records have done as much.
