2012Album

Divorce, fatherhood and an ex wife's dress on the sleeve, handled with more grace than the subject usually gets.

He is holding a green dress on the cover, the one his ex wife wore when they married, and the album is exactly that literal about what it is doing. Two producers handle almost all of it, which fixes the scattered sound of the previous decade in one move. Daughters is a father admitting he has no idea how to raise a teenage girl while touring, and it does not resolve into a lesson. Bye Baby closes the record on the marriage without settling scores, which is a harder trick than the diss track everybody expected.

Stay and The Don are pure swagger and he sounds delighted to be doing them. Cherry Wine pairs him with a singer who had died before release, and the song carries that weight without exploiting it. Loco-Motive puts a producer from his debut back on the microphone beside him and the drums land like a promise kept. Accident Murderers is the one moment he sounds annoyed enough to be dangerous. A couple of tracks in the middle coast on charm. That is a small price for a rapper in his fourth decade making a record with an actual subject, an actual sound and no interest in pretending he is twenty.
