Larger Than Life Review

2023Album

A brisk, expensive sounding victory lap with almost nothing inside it.

The intent was clearly a summer album rather than a statement, and on that limited brief it partly works. Wy@ is a great single with a hook that will not leave. Best Time is bright and easy. Upset has some energy from the guest verses. The production, overseen with a heavy commercial hand, is glossy and expensive and completely anonymous, a run of beats that could have gone to any of a dozen artists.

The trouble is what he does with them. The writing here is the thinnest of his career, a checklist of money, women who are interchangeable, and boredom with both, without the sound design that made the same attitude compelling on the previous two albums. Several tracks are guest showcases where he barely features. It runs thirty odd minutes and still feels padded. Nothing is offensive and nothing is memorable, which is a worse outcome for an artist who built a following on being unpleasant with conviction.
