King's Disease Review
2020Album
One producer, one register, and the first Nas album in a decade that sounds finished on purpose.

The fix was obvious in hindsight and nobody had tried it. Give the whole thing to one producer, let him build a single palette, and stop assembling albums out of favors. Hit-Boy delivers muted soul, live sounding drums and enough space for a rapper who no longer needs to shout. The result is the most consistent listen he had made in years. Ultra Black is a statement of position with a chorus that sticks. Replace Me is grown up and unhurried. 27 Summers is a victory lap that earns the lap.
Full Circle reassembles a supergroup from his past without turning into a nostalgia exercise, mostly. Blue Benz and All Bad have real atmosphere. What keeps it out of the top tier is appetite. He is comfortable here, and comfort flattens the writing. Several verses are lists of things that are true about him rather than arguments or stories, and a listener who came for the reporting of his early records gets craft instead. It won him an award he had been denied for a quarter century, which reads as a career acknowledgment more than a verdict on this specific album. Solid, likable, and the start of something better.
