Kamikaze Review
2018Album
Angry, short and mostly aimed at people who were not thinking about him. Better than the album it apologises for.

The energy is real and the target selection is embarrassing. He came back in a temper, made it in a hurry, and the compression helps enormously, forty five minutes of dark synth and hard drums instead of another seventy five of stadium rock. The Ringer and Lucky You are legitimately good, the flows tight and the anger specific enough to bite. Then it spends its middle section on rappers a third of his age who had barely mentioned him, and the argument, that new rap is lazy and sounds the same, is the oldest and least interesting position available to him.
Fall wastes a decent beat on a slur he had to apologise for. Not Alike is the best beat here by some way. As a piece of music it is a functional and forgettable revenge record. As a career move it stopped the bleeding, and you can hear him enjoying himself for the first time in years.
