Immunity Review
2019Album
The bedroom recordings grow into an actual album, and it is far more assured than the backlash allowed.

She arrived with an internet reputation and a lot of people ready to dismiss her, and the debut is quietly a rebuttal. Working with a producer known for melodic detail, the songs get real drums, real guitars and a low end that the early recordings never had, while keeping the closeness of the vocal, which stays right up against the microphone throughout. Bags is the best thing here, four minutes of hesitating before saying something, with a guitar figure that keeps circling the same doubt.
Sofia is the pop moment and it is genuinely joyful. Alewife is about a suicide attempt and is handled with a restraint that a lot of older writers would not manage. I Wouldn't Ask You closes the record with a children's choir and a long fade. The weaknesses are a slight sameness in the middle and lyrics that occasionally settle for the general. A modest, likeable, well made first album.
