I Can't Let Go Review

2022Album

Hazy guitar pop delivered in a low murmur, atmospheric and short of songs that stick.

The palette is set in the first thirty seconds and barely moves for thirty nine minutes: chorused guitars, a lot of reverb, a mid tempo drum pattern and a vocal delivered so close to the microphone and so far back in the mix that it reads as texture. Moves is the best of it, a proper song with a build and a chorus that lifts. Good Looking is the one that found a huge second life online years later, and its quiet insistence is genuinely effective.

Melrose Meltdown has a good title and a decent hook. Elsewhere the record is pleasant and undifferentiated, with lyrics about wanting someone who is not there rendered in phrases you have heard many times before. As a mood piece it works. As a set of songs it is thin, and the sameness of the production means the good moments have to fight the surrounding material for attention. A promising, well dressed first album that plays it safe throughout.
