Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho Review
2017Album
Two headliners book a studio and nobody brings a song. Pleasant, expensive, and gone by the end of the week.

On paper the pairing is obvious. Quavo has the most elastic hook instinct in rap, Scott builds the best rooms to put a hook inside, and the two have traded verses often enough to know what the other does. In practice this is the sound of two people who did not want to work very hard. The beats go to Murda Beatz, Southside, Frank Dukes and the rest of the usual bench, and they arrive competent and interchangeable.
Modern Slavery and Motorcycle Patches are the closest thing to a peak, and neither would survive the back half of either man's own album. Black is fine. Eye 2 Eye is fine. The word almost every review reached for was safe, and safe is the right one, because nothing here is bad, nothing takes a risk, and no minute of it sounds like it needed to exist.
The writing is the flattest either has put his name to, a stack of interchangeable brags delivered with the energy of a check being cashed. Offset and Takeoff turn up and briefly lift things, which only underlines the problem: a duo record should not need the other two Migos to find a pulse. Critics were mild about it at the time and then never mentioned it again. That is the honest verdict on a record made in December for a December release.
