Good Intentions Review

2020Album

The best of a weak run, mostly because the guests are excellent and the beats got sharper.

Marginal improvements add up here, though the ceiling has not moved. The production is the sharpest he has been given, harder drums and more variety in the synth work, and the guest list is genuinely strong rather than decorative. Turks is the standard bearer, a beat with real menace and two guests who attack it properly, and it is comfortably the best song of his career.

Codeine has a good hook. No Debate works. Around them the album remains what it always is, eighteen tracks of the same delivery over the same mood, with writing that has still not produced a single memorable image. Recorded and released during the first months of lockdown, which explains the enormous streaming numbers and not much else. If you only keep one record from this catalogue it should be this one, on the strength of about four tracks and a producer who finally showed up.
