Freudian Review
2017Album
Gospel harmony, a clean electric guitar and a voice that never has to raise itself once.

The restraint is the whole appeal. Almost every track here is built from the same short list of ingredients, a soft guitar figure, an organ, stacked backing vocals from a Pentecostal upbringing, and drums that stay out of the way, and the album trusts that arrangement completely. Get You is the song that carried it, a slow burning thank you to a partner with a Kali Uchis verse that lifts the second half.
Best Part, with H.E.R., became a wedding staple for the obvious reason that it is simple and generous and easy to sing. Blessed is the sweetest thing on it. Hold Me Down and Neu Roses show the harmonic ambition underneath the calm. Take Me Away is where the devotion curdles. The writing is unshowy and occasionally reaches for religion as a shortcut, which is the only real weakness. As an atmosphere it is close to perfect, and people put it on constantly, which is the truest test.
