evermore Review
2020Album
The sister album, stranger and rougher in the writing, and considerably harder to love as a whole.

There are three or four songs here as good as anything on folklore. Champagne Problems is a proposal refused, told in a plain piano ballad that never once explains itself. Ivy is her prettiest melody. Tolerate It is a devastating piece about being unloved at a dinner table. Marjorie, about her grandmother, is the most quietly moving thing in her catalogue, built on old recordings of the woman's own voice.
Coney Island and Cowboy Like Me are richly written. So why does it sit lower than its sibling? Because it never resolves into an album. The order is arbitrary, the sonic palette barely moves across fifteen tracks, and the murder ballad No Body, No Crime is fun but tonally lost among the rest. Evermore closes it beautifully and does not tie anything together. A superb collection of songs and a much weaker record than the collection deserves.
