Dawn FM Review
2022Album
A radio station broadcasting from purgatory, and the most fun he has ever sounded while dying.

The conceit could have been unbearable and it is not, because the songs are strong enough to carry a narrator between them. Jim Carrey reads the station idents with a warmth that keeps the joke gentle. Underneath, Oneohtrix Point Never gives the synths a strange chrome finish, cold in the pads and hot in the arpeggios, so Gasoline and Take My Breath sound like being driven fast toward something you cannot see.
Out of Time samples a city pop original and turns it into the most tender thing in his catalogue. Sacrifice is a great disco record. Best of all, the sequencing behaves like broadcast rather than a playlist, which finally cures his bloat problem: nothing here is filler because every track is a segment. The lyrics stay in his usual lane, regret and hedonism and a phone he should not answer, but the frame gives the same old material a reason to exist. Consistently his most complete work.
