Dark Lane Demo Tapes Review
2020Album
A leak dump released on purpose, and the most relaxed he has sounded in five years.

He announced it the day before it arrived and called it a warm up, which is the right framing and also a defense he did not need. Chicago Freestyle is a mood piece Giveon quietly walks away with. Pain 1993 works because nobody involved is trying to make a hit out of it. Time Flies and Losses land in the sleepy nocturnal register he chases on every proper album since Views and rarely reaches, because a studio album makes him build stadium moments and a mixtape lets him mumble.
Toosie Slide is the single concession to the algorithm and it is comfortably the worst thing here. Demons with Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek is a real attempt at the Brooklyn drill of that year rather than a tourist visit to it. Reviewers split between calling this a good version of mixtape Drake and calling it overlong and unwilling to decide what it is, and both readings describe the same quality, because the record commits to nothing at all.
Fourteen tracks with no sequencing logic and several obvious placeholders hold the production and the writing a tier down. But vibe is the strongest axis on the card and it carries the whole record with it, because for fifty minutes he stops performing status and just raps over beats he likes. He has not sounded this unbothered before or since.
